Wounded Warrior car show coming Sept. 16

The Chandler & Brownsboro Statesman - 8/24/2017

Classic cars and trucks will be making their way to Chandler on Saturday, Sept. 16 for the annual East Texas Cruzers Car Club car show.

The show has been held at Winchester Park for the last couple of years and is expected to draw even more participants this year.

Kenny Conner, president of the car club, said all proceeds from the show will benefit the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation.

Based out of Tyler, the mission of the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation is to raise awareness, to honor, and to empower our Wounded United States Military Warriors who live in Texas and surrounding states, enabling them to assimilate back to daily life upon their return from combat.

Conner said the mission of the foundation is what inspired the car club to select them to receive the proceeds from the event.

In fact, the entire show is a way to honor the military, both past and present members.

The show will officially begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a welcome, prayer and then recognition of all military members in attendance. Conner said a medallion will be presented to all veterans and active military who attend.

Weather permitting, a fly over will be held at 9:30 a.m. while the car show is scheduled to run until 1 p.m. Judging for the entries will be held around noon while the gates will open at 7 a.m.

If weather is a factor, the rain out date is scheduled for the following weekend, Saturday, Sept. 23.

Last year there were around 90 entries in the show due to the threat of bad weather. The year before there were more than 100 vehicles on display.

Conner anticipates a large turnout this year if weather permits. He said the Winchester Park facility is perfect for the show and the participants really enjoy the food provided by the car club.

Last year enough food was prepared that guests to the show had a chance to purchase some.

The show will be accessed of the Martin Street entrance to Winchester Park. Some of the vehicles will be displayed on the parking lot while others will be parked along the grass area near the pond.

More than 60 awards will be presented to the vehicle owners, while a new feature will be added to this show.

A featured class award will be presented to the best truck from the years of 1948-1985.

Conner said this is the first time his club as offered a featured class division but he hopes it is something people come to enjoy.

Truck owners can enter the featured class, or the regular entry. Registration will be held on the day of the show, but preregistration is also available.

While the cars and trucks on display will be the draw for many, Conner said the main reason they hold this show every year is to give back to those who have served the United States.

"The more support we receive for the show means the more money we can give back to those who have given so much for our country," Conner said. "Some of our veterans are not being taken care of. Somebody has to step up and help. We are trying to do our part to help those who have given so much for us."

There is no fee to those wanting to see the show. Those with a classic car or truck who want to enter the show should call Conner for more information.
