Help wanted: Veteran affairs calling all retired medical personnel back to duty

Daily Press - 3/31/2020

The Hampton VA Medical Center posted on its Facebook page a call for available retired medical personnel to help with the coronavirus public health emergency.

The federal office that oversees civilian employees last week approved a request from the Department of Veterans Affairs to waive a section of the federal law that applies to compensation for retired VA workers, according to the post.

The waiver makes it easier for the department to rehire retired VA health care workers. It will help VA health care facilities bolster their medical staffs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The waiver is in effect for one year.

Last month, in response to social distancing advisories, the Hampton VA began doing routine outpatient services remotely and mobile pre-screening services for veterans who need to come inside the clinic for compassionate care or other emergencies.

The VA said it expects to hire interested physicians, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, respiratory therapists, direct patient care support and other medical professionals.

Interested parties can apply online at this link or at the Department of Veteran Affairs website.
